Anti-social?

Are social networks safe? Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn and other social networks have become an integral part of our online lives. Social networks are a great way to stay connected with others, but you should be wary about how much personal information you post.

Social networks ask for quite a lot of personal information when you sign up to their services. They do this to better tailor their recommendations to you. However, once you’re all set up there are a few things to think about, for example:

- Privacy and security settings should be reviewed to ensure that you are comfortable with what is shared. Most people are unaware that the default setting is usually “share everything about me with everyone”.

- Once posted, always posted. If you put it on your profile, tweet it, pin it or post it, it will likely be there until you delete your account and sometimes even beyond this.

- Your online reputation is starting to matter more and more. Many employers review the social activities of potential employees, so be conscious of what you post and what is posted about you.

- Know your friends. It’s very easy to accept friend requests, but not all friends are equal. You should ensure that your posts are suitable for your least familiar connection.
