Raindrops keep falling on my head

Have you ever heard someone talking about ‘The Cloud’ and wondered what it meant? Although the idea is relatively new, it's not too hard to understand and its nothing to do with white fluffy things in the sky.

In the simplest terms, cloud computing means storing and accessing data and programs over the Internet instead of your computer's hard drive. For example, photos taken on your smartphone are stored on your device’s internal memory. However, when you upload the photos to Facebook you are uploading them to The Cloud.

This doesn't mean there's data floating around above your head. The Cloud is actually a physical infrastructure made up of many servers housed in massive warehouses all over the world and any cloud data that we access is really held on those computers.

The biggest Cloud centres are controlled by some of the big names in technology. Apple for example has warehouses all over the world with their largest in the US at over 200 acres, packed to the rafters with Cloud technology.

The Cloud is everywhere and the benefits of using it are numerous. They include the ability to access our files whenever, wherever and however we want to; sharing our lives on soci

al media such as Facebook and Twitter; and getting the latest Rugby World Cup scores as they happen on the other side of the world.
